Solar Air Heater

Solar Air Heater

Solar Air HeaterIf the high price of energy is getting you down as much or more than the cold weather is, then maybe try a solar air heater to help offset the cost of your home heating system.  This video from desertsun02 will show you how easy it’s done.

Of course you’ll need a south facing side of your home for installation (north facing if you live in the southern hemisphere). You’ll also need adequate exposure to the sun.  The fewer obstructions you have, the better. Objects such as buildings, trees, and mountains, can block the sunlight you need. FindMyShadow.com has a tool that can help you for determining the amount and angle of sunlight that you have to work with.

Once you’ve determined the right location for your Solar Air Heater, you can begin construction.   The concept is quite simple, and there are many design variations that can be found on the web. The system draws in cooler air from a bottom vent into a box.  Inside the box is where the air is warmed up from the heat of the sun. It then passes through a top vent and back into your home.

The heated air temperatures coming from the top vent can reach as high as 100 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than outside air.   If you have a well insulated home, even a small to medium sized unit can make a big difference.
